The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has removed the “black box” warning that for more than 20 years cautioned women about serious health risks such as heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer. This label stemmed from early 2000s research on older women using outdated hormone formulations — studies that have since been reinterpreted in light of newer data.
Recent evidence shows that these risks do not apply equally to all women. For those who are younger or within 10 years of menopause, and especially when using low-dose or non-oral forms of therapy, HRT can be both safe and effective. Medical organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, now encourage individualized care rather than a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

While Health Canada’s labelling remains unchanged, many Canadian clinicians align with the latest research and international guidelines.
